Flooring & Tile Repair in Toronto & the GTA — FixitPlus Inc.
The short answer

FixitPlus repairs loose, cracked and hollow-sounding tile, failing grout, squeaky boards, lifting laminate and broken transition strips across Toronto and the GTA. Small-area tile installation and full bathroom re-grouting are both handled as handyman work.

Overview

Floors take more abuse than any other surface in a home, so it’s no surprise they’re where wear shows first: a cracked tile in an entryway, crumbling grout in the bathroom, a laminate plank that’s lifted at the seam, a hardwood board that squeaks with every step, or a transition strip that’s come loose and turned into a trip hazard. FixitPlus repairs and replaces flooring so it’s safe underfoot, solid, and seamless to look at — without the cost and disruption of tearing out a whole floor when a repair will do.

Tile is one of our most-requested repairs. We replace cracked and loose tiles, colour-match and re-grout tired or mouldy grout lines, re-seal, and install small areas of new tile — backsplashes, niches, entry and laundry floors, and patches where a repair needs a few replacement tiles. Getting a tile repair right means matching the tile and grout, setting it dead flat with the surrounding field, and sealing it properly so water stays out. We take the time to make the repair blend rather than stand out.

On the hardwood, laminate and vinyl side, we fix the issues that make a floor feel worn out: squeaky and loose boards refastened from above, lifted laminate and vinyl planks re-seated or replaced, damaged individual boards swapped out, quarter-round and transition strips repaired or replaced, and thresholds re-secured so they’re flush and safe. Where a board or plank is beyond saving, we source the closest match and blend it in so the repair disappears into the run.

Because we’re builders, we also read the floor for what’s underneath. A recurring squeak, a soft or bouncy spot, or grout that keeps cracking often points to a subfloor or movement issue, not just the surface. We’ll tell you honestly when a quick repair is all you need versus when something below deserves attention — so you’re not paying to fix the same symptom twice. Every repair is left clean, level and ready to walk on.

The technical part

What is happening under a cracked tile, a failed grout line or a squeak

Tile repair in Toronto only lasts when the cause is fixed along with the damage. A cracked tile, a crumbling grout line, a squeak or a lifted plank is nearly always a symptom of something the floor is doing underneath, and cracked tile replacement without that diagnosis is a repair you pay for twice. These are the causes we look for before we cut anything out.

Deflection: the floor is flexing

Tile and grout cannot bend. If the subfloor or joists flex under a footstep, the tile above eventually cracks, and natural stone is far less forgiving of that movement than ceramic or porcelain. A floor that gives when you rock on your heels, or dishes that rattle in a cabinet as someone crosses the room, is worth investigating before any tile goes back down. Stiffening is sometimes possible from an unfinished basement; when it is not, we say so before quoting.

Hollow tiles and missing movement joints

Tile set on a few dabs of adhesive rather than a full bed of mortar has voids beneath it. It sounds hollow when tapped and cracks under a point load such as a chair leg or a dropped pot. Tile also needs room to move: a soft joint around the perimeter and, in large floors or sun-filled rooms, through the field. Tile butted tight to the walls can lift and tent when it warms. Where the floor meets a wall, tub or cabinet, the joint should be flexible sealant, not grout.

Taking out one tile without harming the next

The grout around a cracked tile is cut out first, so the tile is isolated from its neighbours. It is then broken out from the centre towards the edges, never levered up from a joint, and the old mortar is ground back so the new tile sits exactly flush with the field. We keep the largest piece of the old tile: the markings on its back can help trace the maker and series when no spares are left in the house.

Sanded, unsanded or epoxy grout

Unsanded grout suits narrow joints, roughly an eighth of an inch and under, and surfaces that sand would scratch, such as polished marble and glass. Sanded grout is stronger in wider joints. Epoxy grout resists staining and needs no sealer, which suits kitchen floors and showers, but it sets quickly and has to be worked cleanly. Cement grouts benefit from a penetrating sealer once cured. On a regrouting job, matching the grout type matters as much as matching the colour.

Squeaks start in the subfloor

Most squeaks are wood rubbing against wood or against a fastener: subfloor nails that have backed out of the joists, a gap between a joist and the subfloor, or hardwood boards rubbing at their tongues, all louder in the dry heating season. Squeaky floor repair from an unfinished basement means shimming and fastening from below. From above, we use screws designed to snap off below the surface, driven into a joist we have located rather than into the subfloor alone.

Floating floors need room, and transitions that let them move

Laminate and vinyl plank float rather than being fastened down, and they need an expansion gap at every wall, door frame, pipe and fixed object. When baseboard, a jamb or a kitchen island pins them, they peak at the seams in humid weather. Floor transition strips work the same way: fixed to the subfloor or a track so the planks can move beneath them, never glued or nailed through the floating floor. Laminate edges swollen by water at a dishwasher or entry door do not shrink back, so those planks get replaced.

When to call

Signs it is time to call about flooring & tile repair

Worth booking when:

Cracked or loose tiles

A cracked or hollow-sounding tile lets water in and only spreads — replacing it early keeps the damage contained.

Crumbling or mouldy grout

Failing grout looks tired and stops protecting the floor; re-grouting refreshes the look and re-seals the surface.

Squeaky or bouncy floors

Squeaks and soft spots are worth diagnosing — sometimes surface, sometimes subfloor, and we’ll tell you which.

A lifting plank or loose strip

Lifted laminate and loose transition strips are trip hazards that are quick and inexpensive to make safe.

What goes wrong

The floor and tile repairs we end up redoing

  • 1A cracked tile replaced without asking why it cracked, so the new one cracks along the same line within a season or two.
  • 2Grout packed into the joint where the floor meets the tub or the wall, which cracks open again every heating season.
  • 3Clear silicone smeared over cracked grout as a quick fix. It traps dirt, peels at the edges and makes proper regrouting harder later.
  • 4Sanded grout worked into polished marble, leaving fine scratches across the face of the stone.
  • 5Fresh cement grout never sealed, so the traffic lanes darken within months and the floor looks patchy again.
  • 6Screws driven down through hardwood to silence a squeak without finding the joist — new holes in the boards, and the squeak still there.
How it works

How we handle flooring & tile repair

How a flooring repair goes:

01

Diagnose the real cause

We check whether it’s a surface fix or a sign of something underneath, so the repair actually lasts.

02

Match the materials

We source the closest tile, grout, plank or board so the repair blends into the surrounding floor.

03

Repair and set flat

We remove the damaged material, set the new work dead flat with the field, and secure loose boards or strips.

04

Seal, clean and check

We grout and seal tile as needed, clean up, and confirm the floor is level, solid and safe underfoot.

Across the GTA

Flooring & Tile Repair in Toronto, York Region, Peel & Durham

Floors across the GTA wear out in different ways. In older Toronto houses, floors have often been built up in layers over the decades, so tile meets hardwood at doorways with an awkward height step that needs the right reducer rather than a ramp of filler. Toronto condos float laminate and rigid vinyl plank over concrete, where sun through floor-to-ceiling glass can warm the planks enough to make them move, and any replacement has to meet the building’s underlay rules. In York Region subdivisions — Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket and Aurora — large tiled foyers take a winter of salt and grit tracked in from the driveway, which wears the grout in the traffic lanes first. Across Peel and Durham, split-levels in Mississauga, Brampton and Pickering mean a transition at every half-flight, and finished basements in Brampton and Ajax homes put laminate over slabs that stay cool and damp.

By home type

Tile Repair in Toronto: What Changes Between Older Homes, Subdivisions and Condos

A cracked tile looks much the same in every house, but the right fix depends on what it is sitting on. Across Toronto and the GTA, the age and type of home tells us a lot before we lift a single piece — how the tile was set, what is underneath it, and how likely a good match is. Here is what we plan for on a tile repair, regrouting or grout repair visit, depending on where you live.

Whatever the home, one thing speeds the job up: spare tiles. Builders and previous owners often left a box in the basement, the garage or under the stairs. Have a look before we arrive — an original tile beats the closest match every time.

Older Toronto homes

Pre-war houses and post-war bungalows often have small mosaic or mid-century ceramic set in a thick mortar bed over plank subflooring. Exact matches are rare, so we sometimes borrow a tile from inside a closet or under a vanity and put the nearest match there instead. Older vinyl tile and its adhesive can contain asbestos, so we leave it undisturbed until it has been tested.

1990s–2000s subdivision homes

Foyers, kitchens and powder rooms in Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill and Oakville were usually tiled over a plywood subfloor. A crack running in a straight line across several tiles tends to follow a subfloor seam or joist movement, not a dropped pot. Builder grout that was never sealed has often darkened in the traffic lanes — a full regrouting brings the floor back without new tile.

Condos

Condo tile sits on a concrete slab, so a crack often follows a shrinkage crack in the concrete below. We repair it with that movement in mind rather than setting new tile over the same line. Many condo declarations also set rules for hard flooring, underlay and work hours, so check yours — we plan around elevator bookings and quiet hours.

Showers in any home

Grout repair in a shower is only worth doing if the tile behind it is sound. If tiles sound hollow or the wall flexes when pressed, water has likely reached the backer board, and we will show you that before quoting a patch that cannot last.

FAQ

Flooring & Tile Repair — common questions

We’ll get as close as possible. If you have spare tiles from the original install, matching is straightforward; if not, we source the nearest match and place repairs thoughtfully so any small difference isn’t obvious.

Often, yes. If the tiles are sound but the grout is cracked, stained or mouldy, re-grouting and re-sealing refreshes the whole floor or wall at a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Frequently, yes. Many squeaks can be resolved by refastening boards from above. If it points to a subfloor issue, we’ll show you what’s going on and give you honest options.

Our handyman service focuses on repairs and small-area installs. For full-room or whole-home flooring, we handle that under our renovation service — just ask and we’ll scope it.

That is called peaking, and it means the floor has run out of room to expand. Floating laminate and vinyl plank need a gap at every wall, door frame and fixed object; when baseboard, a jamb or a kitchen island pins the floor, it pushes up at the seams in humid weather. We free the edges and restore the gap. Planks whose core has swollen from water usually have to be replaced.

Close, but rarely perfectly on day one. Grout darkens and stains with years of traffic, so fresh grout in the same colour usually looks lighter beside it. Deep-cleaning the surrounding joints narrows the difference. For anything more than a few short lines, we usually recommend regrouting to a natural break, such as a doorway or the edge of the room, so there is no visible patch.

Usually the next day, carefully, but it depends on the setting material and grout used, so we give you the exact timing when we finish. Until then, keep foot traffic, furniture and water off the repaired area. If the grout is a cement type that needs sealing, the sealer only goes on once it has cured, which is either a short return visit or a simple step you can do yourself.

It depends on the height difference and whether either floor floats. Two floors at the same height take a T-moulding; a step down from tile to a thinner floor takes a reducer; a floor ending at a sliding door or a fireplace hearth takes an end cap. With a floating floor, the strip is fixed to the subfloor or a track so the planks can still move beneath it. We match the wood species or finish as closely as stock allows.
